Trust Women Virtual March
ACN is a co-sponsor of the Trust Women Virtual March Jan 20-27, 2012 along with MoveOn.org and many other groups. As abortion providers we have trusted women to make the best decision possible for their lives.
Trust Women Virtual March
Since the beginning of time, women have sought to determine when and whether to bring new life into the world through their bodies. On January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court recognized that the right to privacy includes a woman’s personal decision to have an abortion.
“Few decisions are more personal and intimate, more properly private, or more basic to individual dignity and autonomy, than a woman's decision – with the guidance of her physician and within the limits specified in Roe – whether to end her pregnancy. A woman's right to make that choice freely is fundamental.” Justice Blackmun in the Thornburgh decision.
Abortion is a fundamental human right.
Since 1973 the right wing has torn away at reproductive freedom and justice, while shaming and stigmatizing women. Like any fundamentalist group, the ultraconservative right wing is seeking to control and oppress women through their reproduction. With a relentless well-funded, and well-organized political and social campaign, they shame and silence women. They have demonized, harassed, and even murdered the caring physicians and clinic staff people who have risked their own safety to provide abortion care. Yet Independent Abortion Providers continue our work because we care about women and their families, and we know that legal abortion is an essential option. Every day we sit with good women who are making tough choices. One in three US women has had an abortion. These women are not strangers. They are your friends and family.
We call on women and men of good conscience to join this virtual march to demonstrate our respect and trust for women. We call on them to stand up for legal, accessible, birth control and abortion free from stigma. The time for silence is over.
